what stars do best.
okay, so i wasn’t expecting much when joan and me got inside the theater to watch the big screen rendition of Neil Gaiman’s ‘Stardust.’ normally, i have read books of movie adaptations before watching the whole thing (and i usually end up being disappointed, mind you.). at least i didn’t mind reading Gaiman’s book first. or i might have not enjoyed it a lot.
an unconventional love story, i must say. a guy, with a star + a gem in his hands, is being chased by a power-hungry king-wannabe who needs the gem to establish his power, and a centuries-old witch who sees the star as her and her sisters’ fountain of youth. along the way, he runs into a ‘confused’ pirate who harnesses electricity (literally) and a witch who has found joy in tormenting her slave who turns out to be the guy’s mother. on top of all that, he discovers the truth about his identity and the world beyond the wall (which, by the way, is being guarded by a kick-ass 90 year old guardian) plus the fact that he has already fallen in love with the star more than the user-friendly girl he left behind – all at the same time. now that’s an adventure of a lifetime. with a happy ending to boot.
i really believed Tristan left Yvaine for good (haven’t read the book, remember?). but, it was selfless of Yvaine to try to cross over to the human realm, even if it means death for her (thus the title). now that’s unconditional. (‘love is unconditional.’ turns out Yvaine knew more about love than that.)
i really loved the film. michelle pfeiffer and robert de niro’s performances won me over. plus the minimal special effects and the witty humor. i really must get my hands on a copy of the book. or else, i’ll turn ‘whoopsy.’ haha.
